Hadir di UMM, Guru Besar Hukum AS Serukan Deklarasi Universal HAM

University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is one of The Most Beautiful Campus, because the surrounding scenery is very beautiful, "said Brett G. Scharff.

That expression was conveyed by Brett in front of the UMM Faculty of Law (FH) academic community. Law professor at the Law School of Bringham Young University, United States (US), was present at UMM to give a guest lecture.
In his guest lecture, he conveyed a very important message in order to strengthen the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (HAM) in 1948, in front of hundreds of students. "We all live in a world that views human rights from a political side," he said.
In addition, Brett also stated that he did not see human rights as a right that must be fulfilled universally.

"Declarations like this actually have the goal of solving these problems, in a way that reminds us of the value and benefits of the concept of human dignity," said Brett, who was also a speaker at the UMM Master Level Course.

Brett continued again, that at least the Universal Human Rights declaration can provide an illustration of how powerful it is. In this case, namely the concept of human dignity in various situations and conditions. Such as balancing rights and obligations, advancing education on human rights, as well as various things that refer to the legislative process and court processes.

In addition, Brett explained that currently the position of human rights has always been under a lot of pressure from various parties who have certain beliefs. The four ideologies mentioned by Brett are, first, maximism, the notion of human rights which assumes that all these things are human rights, such as the right to vacation, the right to recreation and other rights.

Second, continued Brett, is skepticism about human rights. "Most of the adherents of this idea think that human rights are not rights, because they are something abstract and tend to be forced for purposes. The third is monism or special pleading or only as a special request related to interest groups," he continued.

"The last one is the politicization of human rights. In this understanding they consider that human rights are used as a weapon to attack other groups on the pretext of upholding human rights," said the director of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS) who at MLC presented material The Universal Declaration of Human Right: a Basic Intrduction to its History and Drafting.

Dean of the Faculty of Law of UMM, Tongat admitted, what Brett conveyed at the lecture with the theme Restoring Human Dignity for Everyone Everywhere: The Possible Contributions of Indonesia ", was very useful.
"Thank you very much to Professor Brett. Hopefully it can inspire our students in this law faculty," concluded Tongat. (Source Link)
