Malang (3/4) - Amendments to the constitution have become a legal issue that has recently been widely discussed. One of the amendments' substances which is a hot topic among the public is related to the term of office of the President.

This phenomenon was a topic raised by the Center for Strategic and Indonesian Public Policy (CSIPP) together with the Faculty of Law, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (FH UMM). CISPP and FH UMM held a virtual public lecture (3/4) with the theme Amendment to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia; Strengthening Democracy or Oligarchy.

Located in Zoom's virtual room, the public lecture agenda was attended by experts and practitioners in their fields, such as; Ace Hasan Syadzily (Golkar Politician), Mardani Ali Sera (PKS Politician), Ahmad Basarah (PDI-P Politician), Salamuddin Daeng (Indonesian Political Economy Association) and Sholahuddin Al-Fatih (FH UMM Academic).

In their presentation, the speakers agreed to say that the amendments to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia will not substantially discuss the issue of the President's term of office. Strengthening government institutions is more of a substantive topic if the UUD NRI 1945 is amended or amended.

"PDIP firmly rejects and will not change the substance in Article 7 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia." Said Ahmad Basarah.

The same thing was also followed by other sources. This is because the substance in Article 7, which contains two terms of the President's office, is deemed good enough and does not need to be changed. Sholahuddin Al-Fatih, a lecturer at HTN FH UMM, added that the addition of the President's term of office has the potential to give birth to authoritarianism and open wounds to the history of the Old Order era and the New Order.

"Not allowed. Just two terms. Even if necessary, the term of office of members of the legislature must also be limited. So that there is no abuse of power." Sholahuddin continued.

The public lecture agenda ended at around 12.00 WIB. The general lecture participants were not only students of FH UMM, but also academics, practitioners as well as journalists from several regions in Indonesia. (saf / hum)
