Malang (6/1) - Faculty of Law, UMM, again produced works in the form of textbooks. This time, the book entitled The Ability of Criminal Law as a Means to Prevent Crime was successfully published by Dr. Tongat, SH., M.Hum. The book is special because it was written by the Dean of the Faculty of Law of UMM who is an expert in the field of criminal law.

"People often mistakenly see criminal law. There are at least two wrong perceptions about criminal law that develop in society." Said Dr. Tongat, SH., M.Hum

Tongat added that the two perceptions were related to the public's view that criminal law was a panacea to cure all problems and people's ignorance in seeing criminal law as a symptom curier.

The chairman of Fordek FH PTMA (Forum for the Dean of the Faculty of Law of Muhammdiyah and Aisiyah Higher Education) who is also active in Mahupiki (Indonesian Criminal Law Society and Criminology) reviewed the inability of criminal law to address various problems of current legal life.

"Criminal law is not a remedy (remedium) for all diseases, but merely as a means to treat symptoms." Concluded Dr. Tongue.

According to Dr. Tongat, the community needs to be aware of these conditions so that they do not depend on criminal law in solving existing problems. Through his new book, Dr. Tongat invites the government and criminal law practitioners to involve the community in resolving their own problems, especially the involvement of indigenous peoples.

"Indigenous people are recognized entities in the constitution. They can participate in resolving criminal cases according to the laws they agree on. The Dean's book is very good to be applied in criminal law enforcement in Indonesia." Said Ratri Novita Erdianti, MH., Lecturer of criminal law, Faculty of Law, UMM.
